Southwest Washington Independent Investigative Response Team (SWIIRT) – Vancouver Police Department Officer Involved Shooting Investigation, Release #1

The Southwest Washington Independent Investigative Response Team (SWIIRT), led by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, is conducting the Independent Investigation of the Vancouver Police Department’s (VPD) officer-involved shooting (OIS). The incident occurred on June 8th, 2024, at approximately 2:59 p.m. near Columbia Way and Columbia Avenue in the City of Vancouver. 

VPD responded to a complaint of a male with an aggressive dog that had reportedly bitten someone. The male was described as having a firearm. Officers eventually located the male and witnessed his dog attempt to bite someone. As two VPD officers approached the male, he displayed what appeared to be a firearm and pointed it at one of the officers. 

An officer discharged his firearm, striking the male subject. Officers attempted to provide medical aid, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office is leading the ongoing investigation. Per WAC 139-12-030, which governs independent investigations, additional updates will be provided weekly.
