New Direct Air Capture carbon reduction system about to fire up in The Dalles

A new Sergey Brin backed start-up company “280 Earth” is about to fire up their state-of-the art Direct Air Capture carbon reduction system in The Dalles. Direct Air Capture is designed to capture CO2 from ambient air through multiple stages by using large fans to pull air into the system, absorbing CO2 with a proprietary chemical compound, and then utilizing the carbon in other products or permanently storing it underground.

Efforts to suck carbon dioxide out of the ambient air are still fledgling, but the two-year-old company is in the final stages of commissioning its first 500-ton commercial demonstration plant in The Dalles.

280 Earth’s approach to Direct Air Capture will use waste heat from the Google data center, and according to the company, the captured CO2 will likely be moved via train to be offloaded and sequestered elsewhere.
