Star Trek: Lower Decks ending after season 5; Strange New Worlds gets early season 4 renewal

On Friday, Paramount+ announced the fates of two of its Star Trek spin-offs.

The streaming service revealed it has renewed its animated comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks for a fifth and final season. The show “has brought the laughs with an ample amount of heart to the franchise across its four seasons,” said Jeff Grossman, executive vice president of programming for Paramount+.

He added, “We can’t wait for audiences to see what is in store for the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos in this final season.” That show’s voice cast includes Tawny NewsomeNoël Wells and The Boys‘ Jack Quaid. Incidentally, Newsome and Quaid appeared in live-action form as their respective Lower Decks characters Beckett Mariner and Brad Boimler in a season 2 episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Speaking of which, that prequel series will continue to go where no one has gone before: The show has been picked up for a fourth season, even before its third has premiered. Grossman said the series, which stars Anson Mount as Captain Pike, Ethan Peck as Mr. Spock and Rebecca Romijn as Number One, “has found the perfect blend of action, adventure and humor.”
