Utah upsets Arizona State to move on
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Cole Bajema scored a career-high 22 points, Deivon Smith was one assist shy of his fourth triple-double of the season and Utah rolled over Arizona State 90-57 in the Pac-12 Tournament. No. 6-seeded Utah will play No. 3 Colorado in a quarterfinal on Thursday. Bajema hit 6 of 9 3-pointers and 7 of 11 shots overall. Smith had 15 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Hunter Erickson had 11 points and Gabe Madsen 10 for the Utes. Frankie Collins scored 20 points and Kamari Lands 11 for Arizona State.
Raynaud has double-double, Stanford rallies from 18 down to beat Cal 87-76 in OT
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Maxime Raynaud scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and Stanford overcame an 18-point deficit in the second half to beat California 87-76 in overtime on Wednesday night in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament.
Tenth-seeded Stanford (14-17), which routed Cal 80-58 in the regular-season finale, will face No. 2 seed Washington State (23-8) in a quarterfinal on Thursday.
Stanford ended regulation on a 24-6 run to force overtime tied at 69. Spencer Jones scored 10 points during the stretch, and Michael Jones capped it with a deep 3-pointer with 19.6 seconds remaining. Spencer Jones forced a turnover on Cal’s final possession, but he missed a layup with three seconds to go. Jaylon Tyson missed a 3 for Cal on the other end.
Brandon Angel’s 3-pointer to start overtime gave Stanford its first lead of the game and the Cardinal pulled away with a 10-2 surge.
Spencer Jones scored 20 points for Stanford. Angel finished with 16 points and Kanaan Carlyle had 10.
Jalen Cone scored 19 points and Tyson added 18 for seventh-seeded Cal (13-19), which shot 54.8% (18 of 33) in the first half but just 28% (8 of 29) in the second with nine turnovers. Jalen Celestine chipped in with 14 points and Keonte Kennedy had 11. Cone and Celestine combined for nine of the Bears’ 14 3-pointers.
Cal led 63-45 with 14:36 left.
Cal opened on a 15-4 run and led 45-34 at the break behind Tyson’s 16 points. Raynaud had 13 first-half points for the Cardinal.
Andrews records career-highs with 31 points 7 3-pointers in UCLA’s win over Oregon State in Pac-12
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Dylan Andrews made seven 3-pointers and scored 31 points — both career-highs — to help No. 5 UCLA beat No. 12 Oregon State 67-57 in the first round of the Pac-12 Conference Tournament. UCLA (16-16) advances to play No. 4 seed Oregon in the quarterfinals on Thursday. The Bruins split the regular-season series with the Ducks, losing 64-59 on the road before a 71-63 win at home. The Bruins, who entered at 33% from behind the arc this season, were 9 of 15 from 3-point range — and just 10 of 16 at the free-throw line. After Oregon State guard Dexter Akanno missed the frontend of a 1-and-1 with 2:40 left, Andrews sank his seventh 3-pointer at the other end for a 14-point lead.
Ellis scores 25, USC opens Pac-12 tourney with 80-74 win over Washington, face Arizona next
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Boogie Ellis scored 25 points to eclipse 2,000 for his career and ninth-seeded USC survived two late turnovers to pull out an 80-74 win over eighth-seeded Washington in the opening game of the Pac-12 Tournament. The Trojans face fifth-ranked Arizona in Thursday’s quarterfinals. After the Huskies failed to capitalize on the giveaways, Ellis got a breakaway dunk for a 74-67 lead with 40.7 to play. Washington got a quick basket after that and another after Isaiah Collier made two free throws and it was 76-71 with 27 seconds to go. USC forward Joshua Morgan found Kobe Johnson for a layup with 14 to go but the Huskies got a three-point play from Sahvir Wheeler. Bronny James iced the game with two free throws at 8.9 seconds. Wheeler scored 20 points with seven assists to lead Washington .
