Washington state continues to see steady revenue growth. That’s got Republican legislators standing firmly against any new tax increase proposals in the 2024 legislative session. Hanna Scott reports.
Representative Chris Corry of Yakima believes uncertainty is on the horizon and he’s concerned about potential spending as lawmakers get to work on this year’s supplemental budget.
“What I would push for, in my ideal world, is tax relief – it would be providing direct tax relief to Washington citizens. We don’t need more tax increases – the state has plenty of money. Consumers and families in our state are struggling as is and I don’t want to put any more burdens on them.”
Representative Corry serves as the Republican budget leader on the House Appropriations Committee.
“Is there good stuff in the proposed budget – I think there is. I think some moves for additional funding for special education and student support – I think that’s broadly supported, but we have a lot of challenges, and the answer isn’t always just take more money from people.”
Corry added that he will push back on any mention of tax increases during the 2024 session.
