The Whale’s Darren Aronofsky to direct Elon Musk film

Tech genius Elon Musk is getting the Steve Jobs treatment.

Variety reports Walter Isaacson, the author of the Steve Jobs biography that became the movie of the same name, will see his book on Elon Musk turned into a film directed by The Whale‘s Darren Aronofsky.

According to publisher Simon And Schuster, Isaacson’s New York Times bestselling book is an “astonishingly intimate story of the most fascinating and controversial innovator of our era — a rule-breaking visionary who helped to lead the world into the era of electric vehicles, private space exploration, and artificial intelligence. Oh, and took over Twitter.”

As a bullied child who grew up in an abusive household, Musk went on to create PayPal, get the United States back into orbit with SpaceX and make electric cars cool with Tesla, which made him the richest human being on Earth.

The trade reports A24, the studio behind Aronofsky’s Oscar-winning The Whale reportedly won an intense bidding war to get the biography to the big screen.

The news kicked off a Reddit thread about who should play the tech genius. Users offered everyone from Oscar winner Nicolas Cage to Rami MalekRobert Downey Jr. — who played Tony Stark, the Marvel movie hero who has been compared to Musk — was also mentioned.

Incidentally, the cameo came about because Musk allowed the movie’s producers to use his Hawthorne, California, SpaceX headquarters as a main shooting location for the film.
