Quebec woman finds 34-year-old message in a bottle

A woman enjoying a beach walk near her Quebec cottage, made an extraordinary discovery — a message in a bottle from 34 years ago!

The note, written on an old cigarette pack, was water-damaged, but still legible. Turns out, it was thrown into the water off Port au Choix, Newfoundland.

Trudy Shattler, who found the bottle, summarized the note in a Facebook post, writing, “So in a nutshell Gilbert Hamlyn threw this bottler from his boat ( fox point) on May 29 1989. He had written it was sunny day no wind,”It was put in the water 10 miles off port aux Choix NFLD. I found it on the back side of Pogachou which is approximately 12 miles from St Augustine River Quebec.”

The post caught the attention of Rick Hamlyn, who recognized it as his late father’s. Rick plans to place the bottle at his father’s grave, bringing closure and a touch of nostalgia.
