(Washington, DC) – Today, as communities around the world celebrate Nowruz, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) released the following statement in support of Iranian women standing up for their basic human rights.
“As families in Washington state and across the world celebrate Nowruz, I am thinking of the incredible bravery of the Iranian women who are fighting for their basic human rights and demanding better from their government.
“It’s critical that we continue to do what we can to ensure access to the internet and outside platforms to help raise the voices of Iranians bravely protesting for their rights. Similarly, we must continue to hold the Iranian government and its morality police accountable for their human rights violations.
“Importantly, as communities in Afghanistan and across the Afghan diaspora celebrate the New Year, I am thinking of the brave Afghan women and men who supported the United States over the past two decades, and I continue to urge my colleagues to support the Afghan Adjustment Act.
“Over the last many months, peaceful protesters in Iran have inspired us all with their courageous fight for equal rights and basic human dignity. This Nowruz, I join all those celebrating the New Year by reaffirming our shared commitment to the rights of women and girls in Iran, Afghanistan, and all around the world.”
