What TV show inspired the term "spam" for junk email?

The term "spam" for junk email was inspired by the 1970 "Spam" sketch on the British television comedy series Monty Python's Flying Circus.

The Sketch and the Metaphor
In the famous sketch set in a cafe, a couple tries to order breakfast while a waitress reads a menu where almost every item contains canned Spam meat. A group of Vikings sitting nearby begin loudly and repeatedly chanting, "Spam, spam, spam, spam... " which completely drowns out any other conversation.
  • Early internet and Usenet users adopted the term in the 1980s and 1990s.
  • Unsolicited bulk messages mirrored the sketch by drowning out normal chat room or email dialogue with repetitive noise.
