Rolling slowdowns planned on I-84 near Boardman next week

Travelers should expect rolling slowdowns and delays on Interstate 84 near Boardman between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, and possibly Tuesday, Nov. 10, as crews work on the Boardman to Hemingway (B2H) transmission line project.

Crews will install overhead transmission line crossings at I-84 milepost 168 and U.S. 730 near Bombing Range Road. Flaggers will control traffic during the rolling slowdowns.

During each rolling slowdown, traffic control vehicles will slow approaching traffic and create a 10-minute gap with no vehicles passing through the work area. This allows crews to safely move the ropes across the highway and attach them to the transmission towers without traffic passing beneath the work.

Once the ropes are installed, crews will transition to lane closures Nov. 10-13 while they pull the new electrical transmission lines into place. Speed limit will be reduced during the lane closures, and protective trucks will be positioned to help prevent the lines from reaching the highway during installation.

Here’s what travelers can expect:

  • Nov. 9-10, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Up to five rolling slowdowns on I-84, beginning near milepost 158 eastbound and milepost 178 westbound. Each slowdown will create an approximately 10-minute gap in traffic. Crews will allow traffic to clear between slowdowns.
  • U.S. 730 near Bombing Range Road: Flaggers will control traffic during the rolling slowdowns.
  • Nov. 10-13: Single lane closures and reduced speed limits on I-84 and U.S. 730 to pull lines into place.

Portable message signs are in place to alert travelers of the upcoming work. Plan for delays, watch for traffic control crews and use caution when traveling through the area.
