High school students in New Jersey turned sports into a big boost for the community by completely covering a football field end-to-end with over a quarter-million pounds of donated food.
Hundreds of teens from Howell High School teamed up with the local charity group Dermer Dreams for the second annual 100-Yard Food Drive Challenge, filling thousands of bright yellow collection bags right out on the turf.
Student volunteers and football players lined up to load trucks headed for 30 area food banks — which will provide meals to families in need across the state.
The sight of a football field filled with food was special and inspiring, but all the work behind-the-scenes was the true magic of the event. As Dan Dermer, co-founder of Dermer Dreams, explained, “These students did more than collect food: They united communities and demonstrated the power of working together. Not only will we feed people who are food insecure, but we will inspire young students to take action and make a difference in this world.”
