SCAM ALERT
Yesterday, a resident of The Dalles contacted the Gilliam County Sheriff’s Office after receiving a call from someone claiming to represent our office. The caller requested money, claiming the resident’s son was incarcerated in Gilliam County.
The resident recognized the call as a suspected scam and reported it to us. We appreciate them bringing this to our attention. We will NEVER call you requesting money for someone who is incarcerated. If something seems off, it probably is.
If you receive a similar call:
Hang up and independently verify the caller’s claims.
Do not send money or provide personal or financial information.
Contact the Sheriff’s Office using a trusted, independently verified phone number, not a number provided by the caller.

Please share this alert and talk with your family members, especially those who may be vulnerable to these scams. A convincing story or urgent demand for money is a reason to pause and verify.
