NFL suspends 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw 1 game for headbutt
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw was suspended for one game after head-butting Seattle’s Ernest Jones IV following a late hit on the Seahawks sideline. The NFL issued the suspension, saying the headbutt of a player without a helmet was “contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.” Greenlaw will miss San Francisco’s game next Monday night against Washington pending an appeal on Tuesday.
Eagles and Commanders make poor decisions that cost them wins during tough week for NFC East
Poor situational management cost Philadelphia and Washington victories. The Giants squandered chances, too. It was a tough Sunday for the NFC East and a rough Week 5 altogether for the division, including Dallas losing at home on Thursday night to a previously winless team and an undrafted rookie quarterback. The depleted Eagles gave away an improbable victory in London. The Commanders inexplicably ran the clock out on themselves in field-goal range and had to settle for a tie against the Giants, who wasted two chances to win in overtime.
William Contreras is becoming a swaggy postseason star for the Brewers with his slow home run trots
MILWAUKEE (AP) — William Contreras’ trots around the bases after his homers are as much of a spectacle as the blasts themselves. The Brewers catcher hit his third homer of the postseason on Monday night. His majestic, 436-foot shot tied the score in the fifth inning of Milwaukee’s 7-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 2 of the NL Championship Series. Contreras took his time rounding the bases, just as he did each time he went deep in the NL Division Series. MLB posted a video of Contreras rounding the bases, and it appeared to take him roughly 35 seconds.
Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto gets chased early by the Brewers in a rare postseason dud
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Yoshinobu Yamamoto has finally flopped in a playoff game, and the Los Angeles Dodgers are headed back home with their bid for a third straight championship in serious jeopardy. Yamamoto lasted just 2 2/3 innings for his shortest postseason start as the Dodgers lost 7-4 to the Milwaukee Brewers to fall behind 2-0 in the National League Championship Series. The Brewers continually fouled off pitches and drove up Yamamoto’s pitch count before knocking him out of the game. The 2025 World Series MVP entered 8-1 with a 2.14 ERA in 11 postseason appearances.
Late meltdown by Rays at home leaves them with 7-3 loss to Guardians in Game 1 of ALCS
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — For six innings, the Tampa Bay Rays were in complete control again. Then they unraveled in a hurry. Drew Rasmussen squandered a two-run lead on the mound, Tampa Bay’s bullpen let the game get away and the Rays stumbled to a 7-3 loss against the Cleveland Guardians in their American League Championship Series opener. It was a stunning meltdown at Tropicana Field for the Rays, who matched Milwaukee for the best home record in the majors during the regular season. They hadn’t lost a game started by Rasmussen since July 9, a string of 13 straight wins.
Hitters are winning more ABS challenges in the postseason, and teams are challenging more overall
NEW YORK (AP) — Batters have been more successful with robot umpire challenges in the playoffs than during the regular season. Teams are using the Automated Ball-Strike System more in its postseason debut. Seventy-one of 121 overall challenges under ABS prevailed during the 25 games of the Wild Card Series and Division Series. The 59% success rate was up from 54% during the regular season. This includes an improvement for batters to 57% from 49%. Teams are challenging more in the postseason overall, with 4.8 per game compared to 4.3 during the regular season. Batter challenges are up to 2.04 per game from 1.96.
Patience, trades and 1 bold bet: How the Atlanta Dream finally broke through to the WNBA Finals
Atlanta general manager Dan Padover built the Dream into a title contender through shrewd trades, a little bit of luck and patience from the team’s ownership group. All that has paid off as Atlanta is headed to the WNBA Finals for the first time since 2013 when the Dream play the Golden State Valkyries in the best-of-seven series that begins Saturday. Padover acquired Allisha Gray, Angel Reese and Jordin Canada via trades. His first season he made a blockbuster move, acquiring the No. 1 pick in the draft which he used on Rhyne Howard.
