Lopsided loss could bump Florida from top 10 in AP Top 25; a move up might be tough for Alabama

Florida’s stay in the top 10 of The Associated Press Top 25 could be a short one. The No. 8 Gators’ 45-17 loss at No. 25 Missouri raised the most eyebrows on a Saturday when ranked teams generally won in workmanlike fashion. Florida had opened 4-0 with an impressive 52-28 victory over a then-top five Mississippi to jump from No. 21 to No. 8 for its highest ranking since 2020. The Gators went bust in Columbia. No. 1 Texas was idle Saturday.

Commanders QB Mariota injures his knee in game vs. Colts, rookie Kaliakmanis playing

LONDON (AP) — Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota went to the locker room to have his knee evaluated after a sack in the first quarter of Washington’s game against the Indianapolis Colts. Washington is already without starter Jayden Daniels, who had been ruled out Friday because of an elbow injury, so third-stringer Athan Kaliakmanis was called into action. With the Commanders leading 3-0, Mariota was sacked at the Indy 11 by Adetomiwa Adebawore and Laiatu Latu on third down. Mariota walked gingerly to the sideline, and Drew Stevens kicked a field goal for a 6-0 lead. Mariota was questionable to return. He hadn’t come back by halftime.

Georgia, Notre Dame, Miami and Alabama remain unbeaten and mostly untested; Florida falters

Georgia, Notre Dame, Miami and Alabama remained unbeaten — and mostly untested — as top-10 teams. Defending national champion and No. 6 Indiana, meanwhile, roughed up Rutgers 47-15 in New Jersey a week after holding off pesky Northwestern. Eighth-ranked Florida was the big loser in Week 5. The Gators came out flat and never recovered, getting drubbed 45-17 at 25th-ranked Missouri seven days after dismantling then-No. 4 Mississippi 52-28. It was a huge letdown for Florida, whose apparent turnaround under new coach Jon Sumrall may have been more flukish than formative. No. 2 Georgia, third-ranked Notre Dame, No. 4 Miami and seventh-ranked Alabama had no such disappointment.

Verstappen beats Antonelli to win F1’s Bahrain GP in Malaysia as Russell retires

SEPANG, Malaysia (AP) — Max Verstappen has taken his first win of the year but a retirement for George Russell handed a huge title boost to Kimi Antonelli at Formula 1’s Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. Verstappen was leading from Antonelli and Russell behind the safety car with five laps to go when Russell suddenly pulled over in his Mercedes. That means Antonelli further stretches his big standings lead over his teammate Russell. Antonelli finished second and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton passed Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate Isack Hadjar for third.

No. 25 Missouri trounces No. 8 Florida 45-17 to snap 9-game skid against Top 25 opponents

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — No. 25 Missouri ended a nine-game skid against ranked opponents by blowing out No. 8 Florida 45-17. Austin Simmons threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns and Jamal Roberts ran for 211 yards and three scores. The Tigers gave coach Eli Drinkwitz his first regular-season win over a top-10 team in 11 tries with them. Missouri bounced back from a late collapse at Mississippi State last week and improved to 4-1 and 1-1 in the SEC. Florida was held to 325 yards of total offense, and Heisman Trophy candidate Jadan Baugh ran 12 times for only 13 yards.

Eligibility chaos forces Texas Tech reserve QB to catch a late flight to Colo after court ruling

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Texas Tech had to book a special flight to Colorado for reserve quarterback Lloyd Jones III after receiving late word of a decision in an eligibility lawsuit that made backup Thomas Castellanos ineligible Tech’s game against the Buffaloes. Jones arrived Friday night — a few hours after the rest of the 12th-ranked Red Raiders. He was listed as the new third-string quarterback, behind Kirk Francis, who took Castellanos’ spot as the backup. The last-minute rush to the airport is the latest bit of chaos to come out of a raft of lawsuits players have filed challenging a new NCAA eligibility rule that gives most athletes five years to play five seasons.
