A public library in Concord, New Hampshire no longer charges late fees for borrowed items, which was great news for 84-year-old John Hanson who recently returned a magazine that was 132 years overdue.
Hanson brought back an 1894 edition of The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine to the Concord Public Library. The magazine, which still bears the library’s bookplate, was supposed to be checked out for just one week. If overdue fines had been enforced, Hanson could have owed more than $1,200.
Hanson says he discovered the magazine during a move back in 1966 and still has no idea how it ended up in his possession. Library staff were stunned by the find, and archivists say the century-old publication offers a fascinating glimpse into life and issues of the late 1800s. (NBC News)
