When it comes to fire safety, you need a lot more than a wing and a prayer, but a literal wing helped one particular family avert disaster.
Bert Gerber, of Fort Bend County, Texas, tells KHOU he had fallen asleep on the couch in front of the TV when we was awakened to find his nearby barn was on fire.
What woke him up? That would be the Gerber family’s pet goose, aptly named Goosey, who had started loudly honking as the blaze began.
“I just casually came outside and I saw a fire billowing out of there,” Gerber says. “I grabbed a water hose and ran over there.”
Fortunately Gerber was able to put out the fire and all the animals inside the barn were safe. Had it not been for Goosey’s alert, Gerber fears the outcome may have been much worse.
“If I hadn’t been woken up, I think in a couple more minutes, it would have been … out of control,” Gerber says.
Watch out Smokey Bear, Goosey the goose is coming for your title.
