Blackjack! Twenty-one students graduating as valedictorians from one school

A high school on Long Island has hit blackjack with its graduating class.

ABC station WABC reports that 21 students are graduating from Jericho High School in New York as valedictorians.

While the distinction usually goes to the student with the class’s best grades, all 21 Jericho valedictorians earned straight A+’s in each of their courses throughout their four years in school, thus making them all equally deserving of the honor.

“It was hard,” says Riya Shah, one of the 21 valedictorians. “There were many nights where I wondered why I was putting myself through this.”

Jericho High School notably uses an unweighted grading system, meaning that honors and AP classes count the same as non-honors courses. Still, that didn’t stop most of the valedictorians from taking higher-level courses.

We can only imagine how fierce the competition will be when it comes to class reunion time.
