The San Francisco Giants steal bases and Chonkers the giant sea lion steals hearts

San Francisco is home to the Giants baseball team, and also a giant sea lion.

As The Wall Street Journal reports, a 2,000-pound pinniped dubbed Chonkers has taken up residence on SF’s Pier 39, capturing the hearts of the city’s residents and beyond.

Chonkers certainly earned his name — as a member of the Steller sea lion species, he’s much larger than the California sea lions that usually weigh about 600 to 850 pounds.

Sea lions are a common sight on Pier 39, so much so that harbor staff have built floats for them to hang out and, hopefully, keep them from the boat docks used by people. Luckily, Chonkers hasn’t show any interest in the boating docks.

“I’m really happy to say that hasn’t been a problem we’ve had to face,” says harbormaster Sheila Chandor. “He doesn’t have anything to prove and that works in our favor.”

Oh, to have the confidence of Chonkers the sea lion.
