Golden Tempo takes the Kentucky Derby as Cherie DeVaux becomes the 1st woman to train its winner

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Golden Tempo has won the Kentucky Derby at odds of 23-1 to make Cherie DeVaux the first woman to train the winner of the opening leg of the Triple Crown. DeVaux is just the second female trainer to win any Triple Crown race after Jena Antonucci won with Arcangelo in the 2023 Belmont Stakes. Jockey Jose Ortiz won the Derby for the first time in his 11th try. Renegade was second, with brother Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard, and long shot Ocelli was third. DeVaux during the week shifted from downplaying what it would mean to be the first woman to train a Derby winner to understanding she’s a role model to girls who might want to follow in her footsteps someday.

Stankoven, Andersen lead Hurricanes past Flyers 3-0 in Game 1 of 2nd-round series

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Logan Stankoven scored twice to continue his postseason tear and the Carolina Hurricanes smothered the Philadelphia Flyers in a 3-0 victory Saturday night to open the second-round series. Jackson Blake also scored for Carolina, and Frederik Andersen stopped 19 shots for his second shutout of these playoffs and seventh in his postseason career. Game 2 of the series is Monday night in Raleigh. Carolina never trailed in closing a first-round sweep of Ottawa last weekend, then had an extended break while the Flyers battled to push past Pittsburgh in overtime of Game 6 on Wednesday night. Instead, the Hurricanes pounced from the opening puck drop, a departure from how all four regular-season meetings went to overtime or a shootout.

Golden Tempo’s last-to-first Kentucky Derby win explained

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Golden Tempo went from being last in a field of 18 horses in the Kentucky Derby three-quarters of a mile into the race to winning it by a neck. Jose Ortiz saved ground along the rail for much of the trip while long shot Six Speed and other rivals set a hot pace around the track at Churchill Downs. Ortiz began weaving through horses around the far turn but he and Golden Tempo still had 11 horses to pass at the top of the stretch. The jockey who has gotten to know the track and Golden Tempo well charged past everyone to pull off a memorable victory.

Young still in control at Doral, leads Cadillac Championship. Rain forecast for Sunday’s final round

DORAL, Fla. (AP) — Cameron Young didn’t have as easy of a time in the third round of the Cadillac Championship as he did while building a big lead Thursday and Friday. It didn’t seem to matter, either. Young is still in full control at Trump National Doral, after his round of 2-under 70 on Saturday got him to 15 under for the week. He took a six-shot lead over a group that includes top-ranked Scottie Scheffler into a potentially rainy final round Sunday.

Padres announce agreement to sell team to investor group led by Kwanza Jones and José E. Feliciano

The San Diego Padres have reached an agreement to sell control of the team to an investor group led by Kwanza Jones and José E. Feliciano. The family of late owner Peter Seidler formally announced the deal Saturday. The sale must still be approved by Major League Baseball. The deal with private equity billionaire Feliciano and his wife took shape last month at an MLB-record valuation of $3.9 billion. The Padres’ announcement of the deal didn’t give specifics on the members of the investor group or the purchase price. Seidler’s family began to explore a sale of the Padres last November, two years after the death of the popular Peter Seidler, who became the Padres’ primary owner in 2020.

The Reds tie an MLB record by walking 7 straight batters in a 17-7 loss to the Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds issued a Major League Baseball record-tying seven straight walks during the second inning of a 17-7 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday. It was the third time in major league history that a team had walked that many batters consecutively — and the first time in more than four decades, according to the Elias Sports Bureau and Sportradar. Starting pitcher Rhett Lowder walked three batters in the second inning and was replaced by Connor Phillips, who walked the next four, each time with the bases loaded. The Pirates scored five runs in the inning without a hit.

Carson Hocevar is starting up front again in Texas a week after his breakthrough NASCAR Cup victory

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Carson Hocevar is suddenly spending a lot of time out front in NASCAR. A week after his breakthrough Cup victory at Talladega, the 23-year-old Hocevar will start on the front row at Texas for the second year in a row. He led the first 22 laps there last year. He’s already been to Victory Lane at the 1 1/2-mile track this weekend, winning the Truck Series race on Friday night. Hocevar earned his second career Cup pole on Saturday with a lap of 191.340 mph. That was just .0003 seconds ahead of Spire Motorsports teammate Daniel Suarez.

Ryan Reynolds ‘gutted’ as Wrexham misses out on playoffs to put Premier League dream on hold

Wrexham’s dream of reaching the Premier League is over, for this season anyway. The Welsh club owned by Hollywood celebrities Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac missed out on a place in the playoffs in the second-tier Championship after drawing 2-2 with Middlesbrough in a dramatic final round of the regular season on Saturday. That allowed Hull to jump ahead of Wrexham and into sixth place, the fourth and final spot in the playoffs. Hull beat Norwich 2-1 in a match played at the same time. It ends Wrexham’s unprecedented run of three straight promotions. Reynolds says he is “completely gutted by today’s result but incredibly proud of our season.”

Kimi Antonelli storms to Miami Grand Prix pole as Mercedes rebounds after sprint race stumble

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Kimi Antonelli helped Mercedes rebound from a disappointing showing in the Saturday sprint race at the Miami Grand Prix by winning the pole in qualifying just a few hours later. It’s the third consecutive pole for the current Formula One championship leader, who blocked Max Verstappen from taking the top starting spot at Miami International Autodrome for a third straight year. Mercedes has dominated the competition this season, with George Russell winning from the pole in the season-opening race, then Antonelli winning from the pole in the two grands prix that followed. Verstappen earned his best starting spot of the season.
