Republican Cuts are Bulldozing Health Care for American Families
March Tally of Layoffs, Closures and Harms to the American Health Care System Reveals Looming Crisis Following Republicans’ Cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act
Washington, D.C. – Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and House Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone Jr., D-N.J., today released their latest report spotlighting the consequences of Donald Trump and Republicans’ health care nightmare, with a focus on the fallout of the Republican Big Ugly Bill.
After Trump and Republicans gutted more than $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in July 2025, growing numbers of health care clinics are closing, workers are being laid off, patients are losing insurance coverage, and states are scrambling to fill budget gaps.
“Thanks to Trump’s Big Ugly Bill, hospitals are closing, providers are losing their income, and patients can’t access affordable care,” Wyden said. “Republicans may run and hide from the facts all they want, but the reality is that they have destroyed the health and wellbeing of American families in Oregon and nationwide.”
“Republicans cut more than a trillion dollars from Americans’ health care to pass tax breaks that overwhelmingly benefited the wealthy,” Pallone said. “And now Americans are paying for it with their health and well-being. People are losing their health care, hospitals are closing, and doctors and nurses are being laid off all so that the rich can get richer.”
