The tortoise and the scare: Reptile escapes from high school enclosure

This tortoise attempted a slow and steady escape.

Georgia’s Hinesville Police Department reports that the reptile got loose from its enclosure at a local high school. According to the department’s Facebook, the tortoise “made it a surprising distance before area residents witnessed the great escape and called 911.”

“With a little teamwork (and a lot of muscle), D-Watch officers managed to load up the very large, very determined, and ridiculously heavy ‘dinosaur’ and return him safely to his enclosure,” the post reads. “We made sure the gate was secured so our shelled escape artist wouldn’t be making another run for it anytime soon… and thanked him for the unexpected workout.”

It concludes, “Next time we’ll make sure to stretch before lifting.”

Maybe now the hare can finally win the race.
