What is a rhino horn made of?

Rhino horns are not made of bone or attached to the skull. They are made entirely of keratin, the same tough fibrous protein that makes up human hair, fingernails, and animal hooves.
Unlike the horns of most animals (like cattle or sheep), which have a bony core coated in a thin outer layer, a rhino's horn is solid keratin all the way through. It is essentially a dense, tightly packed bundle of fused hair-like fibers that grows continuously throughout the animal's life.
