The Washington House has unanimously approved a bill to permanently protect senior centers from property taxes.
Multipurpose senior centers across Washington are one step closer to permanent property tax relief after the House unanimously passed House Bill 2133, Thursday.
Representative Stephanie Barnard of Pasco, who authored the measure, says the bill protects some of the state’s most vulnerable residents.
“This is one of our most vulnerable populations. These are our seniors, our elders. We need to do a good job of treating our elders with respect and care for them.”
The measure removes a sunset clause that would have ended the tax exemption in 2028, helping centers continue serving seniors in their communities. Barnard says those centers play a critical role in keeping seniors connected.
“They seem to be a community. They really thrived under those circumstances.”
Lawmakers approved the measure unanimously, and the bill now moves to the Senate.
