On December 2nd, 2025 Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Tim Neher received a call that an 84-year-old was a victim of a computer virus scam.
Scammers coerced the victim into sending them $11,000.00 in cash via UPS to an address in California. The address in California was found to be a vacant rental house which scammers commonly have victims send packages to. The scammers also use “burner” phones. The victim realized he was being scammed and contacted the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Neher responded right away, and then reached out to UPS, to which UPS directed him to
contact S and S Auto Value (formerly CarQuest) in Goldendale as the originating package shipper. Deputy Neher reached out to Andy Halm of S and S Auto Value, who assisted in working with UPS to have the package sent back to S and S Auto Value.
On December 3, 2025, the package arrived back at S and S Auto Value and the $11,000.00 was recovered and returned.
The family of the victim were contacted and assisted in ensuring there was no further contact between the victim and the scammers.
Please make sure your friends and family are aware of financial security so they won’t fall victim to these very convincing scammers. Great work by Deputy Neher and thank you for the quick help from Andy Halm!
