Story by Rodger Nichols for Gorge Country Media
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson today gave his approval to the Carriger Solar Project in Klickitat County. This follows the governor’s rejection of the first application in which he required the developer, Cypress Creek Renewables, to address concerns raised by the several tribes.
Some changes were made, but not enough to gain tribal support. A tribal member on EFSEC, the state’s Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council voted against the revised proposal, but was the only no vote.
The governor’s approval is the last regulatory step required for the project to begin, a project that has stirred strong local opposition.
A press release from Governor Ferguson’s office said the facility “is projected to generate millions in local and state property tax revenue and create hundreds of needed jobs during construction.”
It also noted the project must start by July 4, 2026 in order to qualify for clean energy tax credits, and that “These tax credits ensure the project remains economically viable.” Translation: The project wouldn’t be financially worth doing without the tax credits.
