The usual reply from a teenager when asked by their parents what they did in school that day is an unenthusiastic “nothing.” However, the students of Ohio’s Amherst Junior High certainly couldn’t say that when they got home on Nov. 13.
According to a letter from the school, a deer came crashing through the cafeteria window at about 7:20 a.m. while several students and staff members were in the area for breakfast.
“We were able to quickly barricade and contain the deer in the cafeteria and, ultimately, on the stage. With the help of several staff members and APD, we were able to get the deer funneled out the back door without any additional damage or minor injury,” the letter reads. “As shocking as the event was to witness, we are happy to report that no significant injuries took place although a couple of students and staff members were present in the cafeteria when the deer came through the window. Our nurse was onsite and able to support any student in need.”
The letter notes that all students were allowed to eat breakfast during first period and the school planned to “continue our school day as normally as possible.”
“As an aside, our students handled themselves extremely well,” the letter concludes, which is a nice sentiment, though we’re guessing the students would’ve preferred just to have the day off.
