CINCINNATI (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers set a single-season franchise record with their 14th straight victory Saturday. And, in keeping with recent form, it wasn’t easy. The MLB-leading Brewers rallied for the second straight game and beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-5 in 11 innings. This Milwaukee club set a new benchmark — so far — for consecutive victories, surpassing the 1987 team that opened that season by winning its first 13 games. The Brewers will look to add to their streak in the series finale on Sunday. Milwaukee’s overall record for consecutive wins is 16 games, from 1986-87, when they won their last three games in 1986 and their first 13 in 1987.
Robert MacIntyre up to the test and holds 4-shot lead over Scheffler in BMW Championship
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Robert MacIntyre passed a big test in the BMW Championship. He had a five-shot lead over the best player in the world and held his own. MacIntyre made a 40-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 68. His lead is at four shots over Scottie Scheffler going into the final round at Caves Valley. Scheffler was efficient as ever in his round of 67. He made one bogey, ending his streak of 37 holes without one. Akshay Bhatia had the first hole-in-one of his tour career that could go a long way toward getting to the Tour Championship.
Phillies ace Zack Wheeler diagnosed with blood clot in right arm, placed on 15-day IL
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies have placed ace Zack Wheeler on the 15-day injured list with a blood clot in his right arm. Phillies executive Dave Dombrowski says Wheeler has been diagnosed with a “right, upper extremity blood clot.” Wheeler pitched Friday against Washington and was limited to five innings for the second consecutive start. The right-hander allowed two runs and four hits. The 35-year-old Wheeler is 10-5 this season with a 2.71 ERA.
K.J. Henry’s pick-6 leads Browns to win over Eagles in preseason game with Shedeur Sanders sidelined
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Cleveland Browns secured a 22-13 preseason victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. The decisive play came from K.J. Henry, who returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Saturday’s game saw most regular starters sitting out, including Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley for the Eagles and Myles Garrett and Jerry Jeudy for the Browns. Andrew Mukuba and Jihaad Campbell, top draft picks for the Eagles, made impressive defensive plays. Cleveland’s Shedeur Sanders, injured earlier in the week, didn’t play. ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — The Washington Commanders have activated Terry McLaurin off the physically unable to perform list. Lingering contract extension talks have kept the 2024 second-team All-Pro off the practice field for the entirety of training camp. McLaurin is entering the final year of a three-year, $68.2 million contract signed in 2022. Coach Dan Quinn said the PUP activation was about beginning the “return-to-play” process where McLaurin acclimates physically with enough time for a hopeful return to action for the regular season. Quinn said he doubted McLaurin would play in either of Washington’s remaining preseason games.

The top 30 in the FedEx Cup advance, and Bhatia is on the bubble, entering this event in 29th place. His hole-in-one came on a challenging 227-yard, par 3. Bhatia shot a 5-over 75 in the first round Thursday, but a third-round 66 on Saturday moved him to even par. The ace earned him a BMW iX M70 and $125,000 for the Evans Scholars Foundation.

HOUSTON (AP) — Baltimore Orioles rookie right-hander Brandon Young had to move past his last start. In dropping to 0-6, Young saw his ERA increase to 6.70 through the first 10 starts of his major league career after allowing six runs over three innings against the Athletics on Aug. 9. Young bounced back and nearly made history on Friday night. The 26-year old was four outs from throwing the first perfect game in Orioles history before former teammate Ramon Urias’ bouncer to the left of the mound spoiled his bid.
Semenyo thanks soccer community for support after alleged racial abuse at Anfield
LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo has thanked his teammates, Liverpool’s players and the soccer community as a whole for the “overwhelming messages of support” he received after reporting that he was racially abused by a fan during the Premier League’s season opener at Anfield. Merseyside Police said in a statement that a 47-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. He was taken into custody to be interviewed. Semenyo, who is Black, posted on Instagram on Saturday to say “the overwhelming messages of support from across the football world remind me why I love this sport.”
