The Dalles City Council met last night, getting a presentation from Jim Winterbottom, District Manager of Waste Connections about the Plastic Pollution and Recycling Modernization Act. That got underway statewide on July 1st but is slowly going to be phased in over the next year. It will allow for some new items to be recycled but they will go into a different container than items that would go into the blue bins. More on these changes will come down the road when the new collection containers are available and the program is started to be implemented.
During the Councilors report, Councilor Richardson, talked that the city should be involved in wildfire mitigation:
“Though it’s not a traditional area of work for our city, I do feel our city probably needs to be engaged in some level of conversation wildfire mitigation. We have a lot of neighborhoods that are on the margins of town and that is on the periphery and ah subject to potential exposure to wildfire. We’ve seen, obviously, locally the really dramatic and terrible effects that can have on a community in Rowena.”
Maybe something for a possible discussion down the road.
Mayor Mays commented that he is looking for members for the Beautification Committee:
“I’m looking for members of the beautification and tree committees so if anybody, for example, sitting in the back row would like to volunteer for our beautification and tree committee, we’re looking for people, ah good people, and if you’re not interested please spread the word around town. It’s a great committee whose done a lot of great work.”
The Council also approved adoption of a flood plain plan and approved the Federal Street vacation to allow for the development of the Federal Street Plaza.
