In vote to change Illinois state flag, residents choose to keep old flag

The Illinois state flag will continue to fly high after surviving a vote to possibly change it.

According to The Associated Press, residents of the Prairie State were asked to voice their opinion on choosing a new flag to replace the one that’s represented Illinois since 1915. The vote was instituted following years of criticizing the flag with the nickname “Seal on a Bedsheet” or SOB.

The candidates included 10 new designs, alongside the current one and two former editions. When the count was over, 43% of the nearly 385,000 votes cast supported keeping the flag just as it is.

“Some may call it an SOB and the vexillogical community [flag experts] may hate it, but people overwhelmingly prefer our current state flag,” says Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias.

We’re more surprised that the winner wasn’t called Flaggy McFlagface.
