While a “wooly devil” sounds like a mix between an extinct Ice Age beast and an unintelligible Looney Tunes character, it is actually the name of a newly discovered plant.
According to the California Academy of Sciences, the wooly devil is a member of the sunflower family found in Texas’ Big Bend National Park. It’s the first new plant genus discovered in a U.S. national park since 1976.
“While many assume that the plants and animals within our country’s national parks have probably been documented by now, scientists still make surprising new discoveries in these iconic protected landscapes,” says researcher Isaac Lichter Marck.
The wooly devil gets its name from its leaves’ white hairs, which researchers compared to the wool of a bighorn sheep. And it definitely sounds better than “hairy Satan.”
