Suzanne Schmidt, R-Spokane Valley, has been appointed to a leadership position on the House Transportation Committee and will be involved in transportation budget discussions and priority issues before the committee.
Schmidt, who served on the House Transportation Committee in her first term, has been appointed as one of the committee’s assistant-ranking Republicans.
“I am excited to serve in a leadership position on the Transportation Committee for our caucus and the Fourth District. I want to ensure that the North-South freeway is finished as soon as possible. Our region is growing rapidly, and our transportation needs and projects are vital to our future growth. I look forward to being a strong voice for the Spokane area and our state on transportation issues in the upcoming session,” said Schmidt, R-Spokane Valley. “Our transportation system is at a critical crossroads. Washington state is not keeping up with road maintenance and preservation, and construction projects have been delayed and are exceeding expected costs. We need to be innovative and creative with our transportation funding moving forward.”
Schmidt will continue to serve as the lead Republican on the House Labor and Workplace Standards Committee.
“I am honored that our leadership continues to support my ability to help lead this committee for our caucus. I am pleased to be on the front lines of the workforce issues impacting our state once again,” said Schmidt. “This assignment is a great fit for my business background and my knowledge of business, labor, and work issues, that will be before the Legislature.”
The House Labor and Workplace Standards Committee considers issues relating to industrial insurance; unemployment compensation; collective bargaining; family leave; safety and health standards; occupational health; wage laws and employment discrimination. The committee will also look at building and construction trade issues.
Schmidt will also continue to serve on the House Postsecondary Education and Workforce Committee.
The Washington State Legislature convenes on Monday, Jan. 13.
