The Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University has completed an inventory of human remains collected from the Chemawa Indian School in Marion County, Oregon.
The remains, consisting of hair clippings from a 15-year-old identified as ‘Quileute,’ were collected between 1930 and 1933 and are culturally affiliated with the Quileute Tribe of the Quileute Reservation.
Repatriation of these remains is scheduled to occur on or after December 19, 2024, in accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).
Requests for repatriation can be submitted by the Quileute Tribe or any other Indian Tribe or Native Hawaiian organization that can demonstrate cultural affiliation.
If multiple requests are received, the Peabody Museum will determine the most appropriate requestor for repatriation.
This action is part of the National Park Service’s administrative responsibilities under NAGPRA, although the determinations are made by the Peabody Museum.
