Soccer fans in Norway made their voices heard Sunday in a very unusual, and likely smelly, way.
UPI reports that fans upset over the use of the Video Assistant Referee, or VAR, during games threw fish cakes on the field just after kickoff at the Norwegian professional league match between Rosenborg BK and Lillestrom.
At first the game was just delayed to deal with the fish cakes, but when players were brought back the fans continued the fish cake protest, with some tennis balls and smoke bombs thrown in, as well. That led to the game being officially suspended.
VAR was adopted by the league in 2023, but fans aren’t, well, fans. It seems they think its use causes too much of a delay in the game as they wait for referees to make decisions on calls.
The suspended game is expected to be rescheduled.
