Denmark plans to tax livestock farmers for the greenhouse gasses emitted by their cows, sheep and pigs when they let one rip.
Beginning in 2030, Danish livestock farmers will be taxed $43 per ton of carbon dioxide equivalent. By 2035 that tax will increase to $108, according to The Associated Press.
The aim, Taxation Minister Jeppe Bruus tells the outlet, is to reduce Danish greenhouse gas emissions by 70% from 1990 levels by 2030.
AP reports that although carbon dioxide tends to get most of the blame for climate change, methane traps about 87 times more heat on a 20-year timescale, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
