Washington school districts would not be able to remove certain books under a bill that passed in the state House and Senate.
The measure prohibits schools from rejecting books with content on protected classes.
Senator Jim McCune offered an amendment aimed at keeping pornographic material out of schools.
McCune says parents’ rights should be considered in the legislation.
Senate Republicans also spoke out against the erosion of local control.
The bill passed both chambers of the Legislature with no Republican support.
The Senate made changes, so it now heads back to the House.
