We are seeing challenging winter weather across much of the northern part of Oregon today. Snow and ice are affecting roads in lower elevations, including Portland and the Willamette Valley. Coastal areas are seeing heavy rain and cold temperatures. Mountain passes in the Cascades, Siskiyous and the Columbia River Gorge continue to see snow, ice and heavy winds.
In the Portland Metro area, we are preparing for a wintry mix of freezing rain and ice. These conditions are challenging and very hard to combat, even with the tools we have.
We are seeing freezing rain hit much of the Willamette Valley between Salem and Eugene. In the early morning hours along Interstate 5 just south of Albany, an ODOT vehicle spreading salt was rear-ended during slippery conditions.
Our crews report vehicles traveling too fast for the current road conditions, as well as trucks not using chains when needed. At one point overnight, there were nine active crashes between Albany and Eugene on I-5, with trucks blocking the road. These incidents highlight the need to slow down and use the appropriate traction devices for your vehicle.
Snow and ice are not the only hazards brought by winter storms. Freezing temperatures, heavy rain and wind can cause landslides, rock fall, downed trees, and high water on the roadway. Drive with caution no matter where you are going through the weekend and into the early part of next week.
If you are still trying to get to one of the snow parks, consider using one of the shuttles. Conditions remain extreme on mountain passes, so be prepared if you decide to head up into the mountains.

If you must travel this weekend, be prepared
Safety is our priority – for travelers and our road crews. If you decide to travel, plan extra time for your journey and carry emergency supplies. Delays and closures are common during winter storms. Expect to encounter chain restrictions if traveling in mountain passes.
Give snowplows and emergency crews extra space to do their work, and never pass a snowplow on the right. Our crews are working hard to clear roads, but their job becomes more difficult when disabled cars and trucks block traffic.
To help reduce traffic and stay safe, consider staying home or taking public transit. Or, take a snow day and give our crews time to do the hard work and get the roads clear. If you’re out walking or rolling, bundle up and go slow because conditions may be slick.
