A Connecticut resident is standing his ground amidst charges of third-degree larceny, insisting he’s no thief.
Robert Withington, 57, turned himself in on August 25 after allegedly snagging a bag loaded with $5,000 of town tax funds outside a Trumbull bank in May. Withington, a dog trainer, staunchly asserts his innocence, claiming he discovered the money lying unattended and saw it as a stroke of luck.
“I found money and now it’s probably going to cost me money,” lamented Withington, expressing disbelief., according to the CTPost.
Despite police asserting that the bag contained roughly $5,000 and bore the bank’s insignia, Withington argues he was acting on impulse, not intent. “It’s not like this was planned out,” he remarked. Withington’s court date is set for September 5, as the ongoing investigation keeps Trumbull intrigued.
