7/30 6:00 pm update:

KLICKITAT COUNTY – On Sunday, July 30th, 2023 at 6:00 am, Northwest Incident Management Team 8 returned operational control of the Newell Road Fire to local jurisdiction agencies including the Washington Department of Natural Resources, the Klickitat County Department of Emergency Management, the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office, and local Fire Districts. 

Some smoke will likely remain visible for some time, if the public notices active fire in the coming days call 911 or the non-emergency line 509-773-4545 and local dispatchers will direct those calls as needed. For general inquiries about the Newell Road Fire call 509-773-0570 during normal business hours (8:00 am to 5:00 pm).

There are currently 2 areas with evacuation notices within the fire area.  A level 2 “GET SET” area in the northern most area, and a level 1 “GET READY” around the level 2 area.  Please visit the Klickitat County Department of Emergency Management’s webpage of Facebook page for a detailed map on the evacuation areas.

Recovery and Damage Assessment activities have begun and the public should monitor the  Klickitat County Department of Emergency Management webpage (www.klickitatcounty.org/249 ) or Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/KlickitatDEM911)      for information on reporting damage due to the Newell Road Fire. 

Residents are encouraged to sign up from Emergency Alert Notifications using the “Sign Up for Alerts” links on the Klickitat County Webpage.

As if 8:00am, July 30th, 2023 the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office updated the current evacuation levels for the Newell Road Fire area.

KLICKITAT COUNTY – The Newell Road Fire was authorized for State Mobilization and is being managed by the Southeast Washington All Hazards Type 3 Fire Response Team. As of tomorrow July 24, 2023 at 0600 the fire will be managed by the Northwest Washington Incident Management Team 8. New evacuations were issued this afternoon that impact many of our residents. If you are in a Level 3 you need to evacuate now, if you are in a Level 2 you should be prepared to leave or seek a safe place now.

Level 3 ‘GO NOW’ evacuations

  • Bickleton & Cleveland and some of the surrounding areas need to evacuate
  • SW portion of the fire which is in the lower Goodnoe Station area

Level 2 ‘GET SET’ & Level 1 ‘GET READY’

  • West of the current level 3 evacuation zones (West of Rock Creek)

Newell Road Wildfire, Bickleton, WA

KLICKITAT COUNTY – The Klickitat County Department of Emergency Management 9-1-1 Dispatch was notified of a wildfire in the area of Newell Road and Dot Road at 2:45 pm on July 21, 2023. The fire rapidly spread in multiple directions and quickly became a hazard to residents, homes, farm structures, livestock, crops, solar farms, wind farms, the Williams Natural Gas Pipeline, and the Roosevelt Landfill.

State mobilization of fire resources was approved at 7:15pm which is bringing in needed resources to assist with this large wildfire. A State of Emergency was declared at 9:55pm by the Chairman of the Board for the Klickitat County Commissioners. As of 9:00 am today, the fire had burned 30,000+ acres and numerous structures of various types had been lost.

Fire, law enforcement, emergency management, posse, and search and rescue personnel are working hard to protect the County residents and resources. The following agencies share unified command supervising the fire:  Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and Klickitat County Fire District #2.  Southeast Washington Incident Management Team #3 in-briefed July 21st at 9:00 pm and took command at 6:00 am today.  

Resources on the fire:

Fire Response – 13 Fire Districts from Klickitat County, 3 units from Skamania County, State Mobilization of Fire Agencies across Washington State, and the Department of Natural Resources are providing ongoing fire protection.

Road Closures:  Roosevelt Grade Road, Middle Road, Old Highway 8 north to and including Dot Road.

Current Evacuation Notifications:

The Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office has issued Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 evacuation notifications. The Town of Bickleton is at a Level 1 (GET READY) evacuation.  Residents are advised to be aware of potential hazards.  The Town of Roosevelt is at a Level 2 (GET SET) evacuation. Residents should be prepared to leave or have left to a safe location. Level 3 (GO) evacuation indicates there is danger currently affecting your area and residents should leave immediately.

Evacuation Notices – Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office with the support of their posse members and Search and Rescue, Washington State Patrol, and Washington State Fish and Wildlife worked swiftly to notify residents through door-to-door notification, ensuring the safe evacuations of residents.

The Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office has issued Level 2 and Level 3 evacuation notifications.

The Town of Roosevelt is at a Level 2 (GET SET) evacuation. Residents should be prepared to leave or have left to a safe location.
