Forest Service to Host Firewood Cutting starting March 17

Columbia River Gorge, Ore. — March 13, 2023 — The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area and Gifford Pinchot National Forest are hosting a firewood cutting event on Courtney Road, located between White Salmon and Lyle, Washington. The firewood cutting area will be open March 17 through April 17 this year, while supplies last.

Gifford Pinchot National Forest free-use firewood permits are required. Under the U.S. Forest Service Free-Use Firewood Program, firewood permit holders are allowed a maximum of six cords per household per year at no cost. Firewood harvested under a free-use permit cannot be resold.

Participants must acquire permits prior to arrival, as permits will not be available on-site. Locations distributing permits include:

·      Mt. Adams Ranger Station at 2455 Hwy 141, Trout Lake, WA (509) 395-3400

·      Home Valley General Store, Home Valley, WA (509) 427-4015

·      Wind River Market, Carson, WA (509) 427-5565

The firewood cutting area will be posted with signs and U.S. Forest Service personnel will be monitoring the area and checking firewood permits.

The firewood cutting event is a win-win, providing community members with an opportunity to collect firewood while removing flammable, woody materials from National Forest System lands. The available wood is a product of recent fuels management activities conducted in the Scenic Area.

The wood includes Douglas-fir, grand fir, ponderosa pine, oak and bigleaf maple in a range of sizes, easily accessible from decks and the wood is 90% seasoned. Wood quantities are limited and not guaranteed.

More details about how to obtain a free firewood permit are available on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest website: http://www.fs.usda.gov/goto/gp/firewood
