New Zealand’s navy recently announced a historic drug bust — but the payload was apparently floating in the Pacific Ocean.
BBC reports the navy intercepted a stash bearing the Batman symbol that contained over 7,000 pounds of cocaine. New Zealand authorities estimate the haul is worth $312 million and that the package came from South American drug producers.
Police believe the package was destined for Australia, where the amount of cocaine was probably enough to keep the drug chain going for a year.
They add the package, which consisted of 81 bales of cocaine, was strung together by buoys.
New Zealand’s police commissioner, Andrew Coster, said, “This is the largest find of illicit drugs by New Zealand agencies, by some margin. … It is more than New Zealand would use in 30 years.”
The cocaine was seized and will be destroyed.
Coster added, “We believe we have dealt a significant blow to an international criminal syndicate’s operation.”
