The Fiscal Year 2023 Omnibus Appropriations Bill includes grants for 9 grassroots projects in Central Washington that Senator Cantwell supported, securing a total of $14,596,000 for the region.

Yakima County East-West Corridor – Yakima County: $2,500,000

This grant will help establish a new alternate connection between Terrace Heights, the City of Yakima, and I-82. When completed, the project will alleviate congestion at the adjacent Yakima Ave/I-82 interchange, provide a direct connection for freight and cargo to industrial areas on both sides of the river, provide an alternative route for commuter traffic, and ensure safe multi- modal transportation options.

Port of Pasco Reimann Industrial Center Last Mile Industrial Rail – Franklin County: $3,600,000 With this grant, the Port has committed to construct an industrial freight railroad spur that connects BNSF service to the 300-acre Reimann Industrial Center to serve future food processing and manufacturing companies anticipated to locate on the northern section of the Reimann Industrial Center.

SECOMM Microwave System Replacement – Benton County: $2,000,000

This funding will completely replace and upgrade the current microwave system, which provides radio communications for 16 law enforcement agencies and 18 fire departments and emergency responders.

City of West Richland for Flat Top Community Park Well Replacement and Hazard Elimination – Benton County: $2,500,000

This grant will assist the City of West Richland in replacing a 1962 groundwater well and associated disinfection system located in the middle of Flat Top Community Park in order to eliminate a potential threat to the health and welfare of the community.

Heritage Heights at Lake Chelan – Chelan County: $800,000

This project will upgrade the facility to provide memory care services and remodel the facility to address critical repairs, enhance efficiencies, and provide technological advancements to help improve safety and the overall quality of life for their current and future residents. They will convert 11 units to memory care to better serve seniors suffering from dementia. The facility is

not currently designed to care for memory care residents and there are no other memory care services offered locally. The next closest facilities offering memory care are located 40 miles away and they are at capacity.

HopeSource Teanaway Multi-Service Center – Kittitas County: $2,030,000

This grant will help construct a childcare facility that will include 50 seats of childcare, an expanded food bank, space for social services organizations, and a community gathering space.

Central Washington University Agribusiness Program Development – Kittitas County: $75,000 This grant will develop an Agribusiness higher education track at Central Washington University (CWU). This will help create three stackable certificates at CWU, which can be combined with General Education requirements or a 2-year transfer degree to earn a bachelor’s degree, focusing on specific areas needed in the Agribusiness workforce.

Save the Children Lower Yakima Valley – Kittitas County: $891,000

This funding will help expand Save the Children and Yakima Valley Partners for Education’s capacity to reduce food insecurity and increase child literacy in Grandview, Sunnyside, Mabton, and additional communities in the Lower Yakima Valley of Washington.

John Day Lock and Dam, Tribal Housing – Central, WA: $200,000

This funding will complete the John Day Tribal Housing Special Study, in consultation with affected Columbia River treaty Tribes and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, to investigate outstanding requirements for replacement housing needs in any identified areas of displacement along the John Day Dam reservoir on the Columbia River in Washington and Oregon.
