LA racism scandal prompts new round of city council protests

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles City Council was disrupted by another round of noisy protests after a councilman facing widespread calls to resign for his involvement in a racism scandal defiantly returned to the chamber. Councilman Kevin de Leon is the only council member involved in the scandal still resisting calls from President Joe Biden to step down. Rival groups of protesters shouted throughout the meeting, some labeling the councilman a racist while others cheered him. De Leon arrived about midway through the meeting, prompting Council President Paul Krekorian to call a recess. The council later resumed business and passed Mayor Karen Bass’ emergency declaration on homelessness.
