DA Mike Schmidt announces arraignment of Shane Cuddihy, 43, for Cafe Yumm robbery

PORTLAND, Oregon – Today, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt announced that Shane Rory Cuddihy, 43, was arraigned for Robbery in the Second Degree and two counts of Menacing.

The charges stem from an incident on Monday, December 5. Cuddihy allegedly entered Cafe Yumm in the area of Northeast 7th Avenue in the Lloyd District and approached an employee stationed at the counter. He allegedly waved a plastic bag in the employee’s face then brandished what appeared to be a gun and pointed it at the employee. He allegedly instructed them to give him “the money in the drawer” and threw the plastic bag at them. The employee complied and put approximately $190 in ones, fives, and a roll of quarters from the register.

A second employee approached and Cuddihy allegedly pointed the gun at them. He told them to get back and used profanities. The first employee handed Cuddihy the bag that contained the money and he fled the scene.

Portland police responded and collected a detailed description of Cuddihy from the employees. Officers also collected a piece of paper at the scene with the suspect’s surname written on it. They subsequently received information from Trimet that an individual that matched Cuddihy’s description was in the area of Southwest 5th Avenue and Southwest Columbia Street. Officers arrived at his location and conducted a search of Cuddihy.

The Cafe Yumm employee that had been stationed at the counter at the time of the incident positively identified Cuddihy. Officers then effectuated an arrest and conducted a further search in which they found a glock-style BB gun.

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office has filed charges, including an offense for which Oregon law permits pretrial detention, and is requesting that Cuddihy be returned to custody and held without bail.

Recent data shows that The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office prosecutes 72% of robberies referred by police. Property crime prosecution rates have been largely consistent since 2019, with a downtick in some areas at the start of the pandemic followed by a quick recovery to pre-pandemic rates by the end of 2020.

A charging document is only an accusation of a crime. Cuddihy is innocent unless and until proven guilty.
