PORTLAND, Oregon – Today, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt announced Patrick Kelly Shorb, 77, was arraigned on five charges issued by his office, including:
- Attempted Murder in the Second Degree – Constituting Domestic Violence
- Assault in the First Degree with a Firearm
- Burglary in the First Degree with a Firearm – Constituting Domestic Violence
- Unlawful Use of a Weapon – Constituting Domestic Violence
- Unlawful Use of a Weapon with a Firearm
The charges stem from an incident on Monday, October 24. The male victim, Rick McCauley, was in his mother’s kitchen when he allegedly saw a man in a ski mask in the backyard approach a sliding glass door to gain entry into the home. His mother, Melissa McCauley, and sister, Emily McCauley were in the home at the time. The man entered the home and asked “Where is your mother?” Mr. McCauley recognized the man’s voice to be Mr. Shorb’s. Mr. Shorb allegedly held a handgun in his right hand and a hunting knife in his left hand. Mr. Shorb then allegedly shot Mr. McCauley in the abdomen.
Mrs. McCauley heard the firearm discharge from the laundry room, where she had been when Mr. Shorb entered the home. Mr. McCauley subsequently observed Mr. Shorb and his mother fighting before hiding in his room. Mrs. McClauley attempted to remove him from her home and then attempted to take the handgun from him at which point he cut her face with the hunting knife. Mr. McCauley heard his mother scream “I’ve been stabbed,” followed by Mr. Shorb asking “Did I get him? Did I kill Rick?”.
Mr. McCauley was able to jump out of his bedroom window into the backyard and climb over a fence to safety. Mrs. McCauley ran away from Mr. Shorb while he chased her with the hunting knife. She barricaded herself in the bathroom. Mr. Shorb pounded on the bathroom door and attempted to gain entry. Mrs. McCauley then climbed out of the bathroom window and hid in bushes. Portland police officers arrived and arrested Mr. Shorb.
Subsequent investigation found that Mr. Shorb and Mrs. McCauley were previously intimate partners. He had allegedly sent her threatening text messages prior to the incident. Mr. Shorb had allegedly rented a vehicle to drive to the home in and a duffel bag with tools that allegedly belonged to Mr. Shorb was found in the backyard of the home. During an interview with law enforcement, Mr. Shrub reported that he had contemplated suicide by cop. He confessed to breaking into the home and stabbing Mrs. McCauley.
Mr. Shorb is currently in custody without bail. A charging document is only an accusation of a crime. Shorb is innocent unless and until proven guilty.
