Evacuation area shrinks near southwest Washington fire

CAMAS, Wash. (AP) — Evacuation areas have shrunk somewhat near a wildfire fed Sunday by gusty winds and low humidity east of Vancouver, Washington, as fire officials got a better idea of the fire’s activity. Mandatory evacuations notices were issued for about 3,000 residents as the Nakia Creek Fire in eastern Clark County ballooned in size. Some nearby schools were closed Monday and a prison was evacuated. On Monday, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office said several roads had reopened as the wildfire continued to burn in rugged terrain of brush and timber. The National Weather Service says conditions that helped fires spread will improve this week with rain starting Friday.
