Biden chooses veteran diplomat for new US envoy to Russia

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration has selected a veteran foreign service officer with years of experience in Russian affairs to be the next U.S. ambassador to Russia. Administration officials familiar with the matter say the nomination of Lynne Tracy, the current U.S. ambassador to Armenia, will be submitted to the Senate as soon as the Russian government signs off on the choice. Ambassadorial nominations must be approved by the host government under the rules of diplomatic protocol. If Russia agrees and the Senate confirms her, Tracy would become the top diplomat in Moscow at a time of fraught relations over Ukraine and the detention of Americans. Her past posts include as senior adviser for Russia affairs and deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.
