Roku has released the full trailer to Weird: The Al Yankovic Story and, as suspected, it’s not exactly Walk the Line.
As reported, Harry Potter franchise vet Daniel Radcliffe plays the Grammy-winning parodist, who in this retelling not only secrets copies of Accordion World in his schoolbooks like some would hide dirty magazines, but also sleeps with Madonna and stubs a cigarette into the hand of a doubting record executive.
A young Al gets in trouble with the law, too, as glimpsed in a scene where a pair of cops return him home: “I’m afraid we found your son … at a polka party.”
As an adult, Al tells his friends and would-be bandmates, “All I want is to make up new words to songs that already exist.”
“Oh. You should do that, then.”
Viewers can also experience the creative gears turning when Al hears The Knack’s “My Sharona” and spots a package of bologna.
Radcliffe lip-syncs to Al’s “My Bologna” and other tracks, including “I Love Rocky Road.”
And speaking of rocky roads, according to the movie, Al’s life takes a troubling turn — a staple of all musical biopics — when he meets the Material Girl herself. Evan Rachel Wood plays Madonna, who wonders why he hadn’t yet parodied “Like A Virgin.”
“Is that song autobiographical?” Al asks. “Yes, except for the fact that I’ve had a lot of sex,” she replies.
Later, Rainn Wilson, the guy who discovers Al as “The Future of Music,” warns a hospitalized Yankovic: “Name one creative genius who doesn’t have a checkered past with alcohol and drugs. I think Madonna is a bad influence on you.”
“No offense,” he tells the songstress, who dismisses the comment.
Weird: The Al Yankovic story drops on November 4.
