Trucker stuck after following GPS over warning signs telling him to avoid road

Man, these GPS things have a iron grip on some people’s common sense. Unfortunately for Vermont police, things got a little dicey when the driver of a tractor-trailer obeyed his GPS navigation instructions and ignored multiple warning signs along the road.

WCAX reports the truck became the first semi of the season to get stuck at the top of Smugglers’ Notch in Cambridge, Vermont, inside a notoriously sharp turn on Route 108.

In all, it took police three hours to clear the truck, as the road remained closed throughout.

There are several warning signs on the road saying the area is not a throughway. The signs even list safer routes for tractor-trailers, but this driver admitted to the police who came to rescue him that he ignored the signs in favor of his GPS.

The driver of the semi was identified as Edzer Cosmeus, of Florida, who’s now looking at a possible four points off of his license and a $3,500 fine.

Trucks are prohibited from using Route 108 because it is impossible for them to fit on the road, but thanks to the power of GPS, more and more semis are causing havoc for police.

As for the locals, they apparently take bets predicting what day the first truck of the season will get trapped on the Notch.
