Mutinous soldiers take over Burkina Faso military barracks

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) — Mutinous soldiers have seized control of a military base in Burkina Faso’s capital, where they are demanding improved conditions for soldiers. The defense minister says there’s been unrest at several other army barracks too. However, he denied that President Roch Marc Christian Kabore had been detained, even though his whereabouts remain unknown. Violence in the once-peaceful West African nation is escalating as attacks linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State group increase. Kabore, who first took office in 2015, has faced growing opposition since his reelection in 2020. Last month he fired his prime minister and replaced most of the Cabinet, but critics are still calling for his resignation.
