Doctor fined for amputating the wrong leg of patient

A surgeon in Austria has been fined after amputating an elderly patient’s leg earlier this year, only to discover two days later that it was the wrong one, according to BBC News.

The mistake was identified during a routine bandage change and the patient was told he would have to have his other leg amputated as well.

The botched surgery took place back in May, but this past Wednesday, the doctor was found guilty of gross negligence and fined the equivalent of a little over $3,000.

Unfortunately, the patient died before the case came to court. His widow was also awarded an additional $6,644 in damages.
